As the motto of our program states, “Understanding China, Leading the Future,” we recognize that gaining a comprehensive understanding of China requires exploring its society, culture, economy, and politics, as well as its rich history. Last Sunday, our students had the opportunity to delve deeper into China’s history by embarking on a cultural trip to the suburbs of Beijing.

During the trip, our students visited several significant historical landmarks, beginning with the so-called Marco Polo Bridge, which played a crucial role in the Second Sino-Japanese War. The bridge serves as a reminder of the tragic events that took place during the war.

Our students also explored fortresses and fortified abandoned palaces that provide a glimpse into the lives of ancient Chinese emperors and their imperial courts. These palaces, once bustling with activity, now stand as a testament to China’s rich cultural heritage.

Another highlight of the trip was a visit to the banks of the Grand Canal, one of China’s greatest engineering feats. The canal stretches over 1,800 km (1,100 miles) and played a vital role in the country’s economic and cultural development.

By exploring these historical landmarks, our students gained a deeper understanding of China’s past and its impact on the present. They also learned how history shapes a nation’s identity and culture.

Here at the Contemporary China Studies program, we believe that our students must develop a nuanced understanding of China to lead the future. By immersing themselves in China’s rich history and culture, they are better equipped to tackle the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

Overall, the cultural trip was a valuable learning experience that enabled our students to appreciate China’s history and culture on a deeper level. We look forward to continuing to provide opportunities for our students to explore and understand China.

We also invite all those interested in exploring China’s rich history and culture to join the Contemporary China Studies Program. We are accepting applications until April 30 ➡ https://international.ruc.edu.cn/
